Leading Egyptian food discovery and orderings platform, Elmenus, has raised new funding from Julian Dames, the co-founder of Foodora and ex-VP at DeliveryHero. Besides the investment, Julian has also joined Elmenus’ board of advisors, the company confirmed in a press release dated June 26.
The enormous domain experience Julian brings along is expected to help Elmenus further expand its goal of disrupting the food delivery market with the smart of use of sophisticated artificial intelligence technology.
For those unfamiliar with the company, Elmenus has been around since 2011. Amir Allam, the founder, launched the company with the vision of providing consumers a comprehensive platform for discovering and enjoying new food and restaurants.
Elmenus claims to have the answer to the basic “universal question” all humans bump into on almost on a daily basis: “What am I going to eat today?”
The company’s online platform offers detailed information on restaurants. Not only that, it has an in-house AI system that personalizes food recommendation to users with the help of data it has already collected.
Julian, meanwhile, is a contemporary veteran in the food delivery industry. He served Foodora Group as the Managing Director and global CMO after the company’s acquisition by DeliveryHero in 2015. His responsibilities during this tenure included all consumer-facing part of the business.
When DeliveryHero filed its IPO in 2017, Julian was tasked with the responsibility of overseeing the company’s interest in the Foodpanda markets. During this period, he led a major rebranding and product migration initiative that replenished and revamped the Foodora markets in those markets.
Julain was also made the VP of DeliveryHero in 2018 and stayed in that role until he parted ways with the company in early 2019.
Speaking on his decision to come aboard on Elmenus as an investor and advisor, Julian noted: “Elmenus has a compelling position in the large Egyptian food delivery market. Their delivery order numbers in the first few months have been very impressive.”
“I was convinced by the passionate Elmenus team and its founder, Amir. […] The guys from Elmenus have big plans for the future and I am really looking forward to working with them and sharing my experience,” he added.
